Celebrating the life of

Robert E. Harman, Jr.

May 03, 1953 - May 01, 2024

Robert E. Harman, Jr.

Robert Earl Harman, Jr., 70, of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024.

Born on May 3, 1953 in Athens, Georgia to Joanne Durrence Harman and Robert Earl Harman, Sr., Bob moved to Savannah with his family in 1959.  He graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1971 and later attended Oglethorpe University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 1976. After graduation, Bob worked for Grumman Aircraft Engineering which later became Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation before going to work for the contracting firm, Structioneers, Inc., founded by his father.  In 1989, he founded Atlantic Records Management Company (ARMCO) where he served as President and CEO for the remainder of his career.

Bob was a lifelong learner becoming a subject matter expert in many areas over the years.  He loved cars, particularly German models and Formula One racing; aviation and the space program; WWI and WWII history; HAM radios and Mid-Century architecture.  He could often be found reading a book on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe or General John Pershing, anything to increase his knowledge base.  Later in life, his love of history became a lively topic of conversation with his grandsons who share his passion.

A longtime resident of Savannah, Bob was deeply involved in his community.  He was a member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of Savannah, the German Heritage Society of Savannah, the Savannah Chamber of Commerce and served as President of the Executive Association. Bob was also involved for many years with the St. Andrew’s Society serving as President in 2017.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Gardner Harman, his daughter, Katy H. Moser and her husband, Robert D. Moser, Jr., two grandsons, Robert D. Moser, III and Wilburn H. Moser all of McLean, Virginia, a sister, Cynthia H. Conner (Frank M. Conner) of Alexandria, Virginia and two nieces,  Isabelle D. Conner and Cynthia C. Conner of New York.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the Robert E. Harman, Jr. ‘71 Endowed Scholarship at Benedictine Military School, Advancement Office, 6502 Seawright Drive, Savannah, GA 31406 or 912-644-7016 or online at Robert E. Harman, Jr. '71 Endowed Scholarship.

Bob will be greatly missed. He was a beloved member of the Coastal Scottish Heritage Society. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Please let us know if you need anything.

- Catherine Simpson, Midway, GA

I was unaware of Bob’s illness. So sorry to receive this news. He and I had a very interesting relationship. We actually hiked up Mount Leconte together and stayed two nights on the top. Not an easy thing to do. Hiking down was actually harder. We had Rick Culbreth to think for that wild and crazy adventure. Bob had a great wit; we shared a lot of fun both at the executive Association and the yacht club. I even took Bob and Rick and their wives on my Catalina 42 for an overnight anchor out in Ossabaw sound. It was Rick‘s birthday I think. The amount of supplies that Bob and Rick put on the boat left little room for human beings. It was a pretty crazy adventure. Godspeed buddy. There’s a cool car waiting on you up there to speed around in while you explore your next life.

Our prayers are with you, Jan and the rest of the family. The definition of Gentleman could certainly include Bob Harman. One of the kindness, most caring fellows I’ve ever met. He was a good friend and will be dearly missed by all of us. He was president of the Coastal Amateur Radio Society and led it with the same kind regards for the fellowship as he had for all he met. He always blessed my family with tickets to the Scottish games and my children will never forget that…..

- Ken Griffin, Savannah, GA

Jan and family, our condolences to you from Lucy and I. Bob and I met 20 years ago through ham radio and we always had fun on the radio and at the various hamfests we would attend. Having many of the same interests made it like we knew each other all our lives. Bob, I'm sure there is a "mid century" recliner waiting for you upstairs! Sure miss you.
